Welcome to the October 2025 installment of AnonyMouse's App Pick of the Month. This month, my pick is EchoBox Player, a brand-new audio player for iOS that immediately caught my attention — not only because of what it does, but because of who created it.

EchoBox Player was developed by Oriol Gómez, a blind developer who has a strong track record of building accessible apps designed specifically for the blind and low vision community.

I chose EchoBox Player because it represents exactly what I love to highlight: something new, innovative, and made by someone who truly understands the needs of VoiceOver users. When a developer who relies on accessibility creates a tool for others who do the same, the results are often well thought-out, intuitive, and genuinely useful for meeting real needs — and EchoBox Player is no exception.

A New Way to Listen

EchoBox Player is a fully accessible media player that supports a wide range of audio formats, including MP3, M4A, and M4B files with chapter support, as well as DAISY audio books. From the moment I started using EchoBox Player, what stood out most was how well it worked with VoiceOver. The layout is simple and direct, with clear labeling and logical navigation that makes it easy to move through folders, select tracks, and jump between sections of an audiobook or recording.

Another detail that impressed me is how the app respects your file organization. Instead of flattening your entire library, EchoBox Player mirrors your folder structure; letting you navigate your files just as you’ve arranged them. It also includes thoughtful playback features, such as the ability to adjust the relative volume of each file, create automatic bookmarks when pausing, and even transcribe audio locally using Apple’s on-device speech tools.

EchoBox Player is not just a barebones media player, either. You can add live radio streams, manage playlists, and even enjoy effects like equalization or reverb if you choose. Yet despite its many features, the app always feels light and responsive — the kind of tool that was clearly designed by someone who knows firsthand the importance of making accessibility and usability the top priorities.

A Developer Who Understands Accessibility

Part of what makes EchoBox Player so exciting is the person behind it. Oriol Gómez is a blind developer from Spain who has built a number of great accessible apps over the years. His past work includes Accessible Hangman, Accessible 2048, Letterfull, Round Logic, and Palabra Cadabra, all of which reflect Oriol's ongoing commitment to creating fun and practical experiences for the blind and low vision community.

That lived experience shines through in EchoBox Player. You can tell it’s built by someone who actually uses VoiceOver every day — the gestures make sense, the layout is clean, and the app avoids the common pitfalls that can make so many other players frustrating. It’s rare to find an app that feels like it was designed from the ground up with accessibility at its core, but this one truly delivers on that promise.

Why I’m Picking EchoBox Player This Month

I’m picking EchoBox Player this month because it’s new, meaningful, and created by one of our own. It’s not a massive corporate release or a flashy mainstream product — it’s a labor of love from a developer who knows exactly what works and what doesn’t for blind and low vision users.

For me, EchoBox Player represents progress in the best sense: it’s practical, accessible, and forward-thinking. Whether you’re listening to audiobooks, podcasts, or your own recordings, EchoBox Player gives you a clean, customizable experience that just works. And with Oriol’s history of listening to user feedback and improving his apps over time, I’m confident it will only get better from here.
