Voice-enabled Makeup Assistant

Category

Description of App

This innovative app offers audio feedback on the user’s foundation, eyeshadow and lipstick application, creating a more accessible beauty experience for the Blind and visually impaired.

How It Works:

The AI-powered Voice-enabled Makeup Assistant leverages machine learning and voice instruction technologies to learn your preferences and provide audio feedback when you ask.

After you apply your foundation, eyeshadow or lipstick, the app will access your phone’s front camera to scan your face. Using artificial intelligence, it identifies the makeup applied to your face, eyes and lips and assesses the uniformity and boundaries of application and coverage. If there are suggested areas to touch up, the virtual assistant identifies them and makes audible recommendations so you can adjust your look. After your touch up, the app scans your face again and provides feedback on the accuracy of application.

Accessibility Comments

The app is self-voiced for guiding through the process, and follows spoken commands in most cases. There are a few buttons on the screen that need to be swiped to and pressed, just thinking of makeup on fingers getting on the phone.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling

All buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.

Other Comments

The light needs to be bright and right behind the phone, and close to your face for it to scan. It will tell you if it can't see your face clearly.
It only checks foundation, lip color and eyeshadow. I had difficulty with the eyeshadow and it told me one side was heavier than the other, for example. It will advise where to blend more.
I do have freckles and it said my foundation was done well. That may have been an issue in earlier versions.
It does not check blush on cheeks, so a different AI chat or app will be needed to ask about that.

The lighting really is very important, and it won't scan without it. This might be an issue for some people. I have two Daylight LED shop lights hanging sideways for my photo studio and I had to put the phone right at the lights before it could see me clearly. I will need to do something like that near a sink and counter in the future when using this app.
The app will not advise you in any way on how to achieve anything other than blending the coverage and the evenness. I read up on what to do to achieve what I was aiming for before I started, and followed those instructions. It might take a bit of practice and maybe even someone showing you what to do, but the app can at least check the three basic applications.
