Description of App

The Old English language is at once recognisable and unfamiliar: many words resemble ones that are used today, but their meanings are not always the same, and they can take many more forms than in the modern language. Liberation Philology Old English helps you master these complexities by practice.

Wherever you have your phone handy, it is ready to drill you on Old English vocabulary and grammar with a continuous multiple-choice test. Your answers are immediately confirmed or corrected, and reinforced through repetition.

  • Vocabulary: 149 levels, each testing the translation of 10 words between modern and Old English.
  • Nouns: Tests your ability to parse and decline all classes of Old English nouns.
  • Verbs: Tests your ability to parse and conjugate a full range of weak, strong, and irregular verbs in Old English.

A further module allows you to review the vocabulary word-list and the noun and verb paradigms.

Accessibility Comments

This app works very well with VoiceOver. All buttons are clearly labelled, and there are no unlabelled or inaccessible elements or views. The opening view has options for reviewing general vocabulary, nouns, and verbs, or for displaying a list of all the vocabulary items in the app. You can tap on the "vocabulary," "nouns," or "verbs" buttons to start a quizz. Once a quizz has started, the question appears at the top of the screen, and the possible answers are buttons positioned beneath it. To answer a question, just tap one of the choices. Your score is shown at the top right side of the screen.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling

All buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.

Other Comments

The same developer also produces similarly accessible apps for learning other modern and ancient languages, so they might be worth considering if you're a student or just enjoy learning languages.
