Apple Wireless Keyboard (3rd generation, October 2009, A1314)

Posted on Thursday 2 February 2012 by Mario Lang

This review is about the third generation model of the Apple Wireless Keyboard.
The keyboard itself is very thin. It needs two AA batteries which you slot into it from the left side on the back of the keyboard. On the opposite (right) side is a round button.
The keyboard width nicely resembles approximately a 40 cell braille display, which makes it a perfect match for use with a Handy Tech Braille Star 40 for instance.
The keys feel very nice during typing, and are quite large. In fact, I am so used to typing on netbook sized keyboards that I had to readjust at first to get used to it.

Handy Tech Braille Star 40 (pre-HID Generation)

The Handy Tech Braille Star 40 is a portable, rechargeable 40 cell braille display with serial, USB and Bluetooth connectivity.  Its physical dimensions are 331 x 227 x 24 mm (width x depth x height).  The tactile surface of the Braille elements are concavely shaped.  Each cell has exactly one cursor routing key located above.  Below the cells you find 8 braille dot keys separated by two space keys.  To the left and right of the reading area are the so-called tripple action keys which you can press on the top, bottom and in the middle position.

Apple TV

As advertised on the web, the Apple TV comes with VoiceOver. Enabling VoiceOver on the Apple TV without sighted assistance is easy: Connect the device via HDMI to your TV or AV-Receiver.  Make sure the appropriate port is choosen on your TV or AV-Receiver so that you can hear audio coming from it once its booted.  Then connect the power to the Apple TV and wait for it to boot.

Once its finished it will announce to you that you are supposed to press the lower right button three times to enable VoiceOver.

Once thats done, the setup process is spoken as well.  Once you choose a language, the VoiceOver language will automatically adapt.

If VoiceOver is enabled, it will speak all the on-screen menu items as you scroll through them.

Two weeks ago I bought a Docking station and this is a cool one! It is a sony stereo with a docking station for iPods and iPhones unfortunately it doesn't work with the iPad. It comes with a Remote control. On the top it has a CD player on the right side of that slot it has an eject button. Below that to the left it has a on/off button and the screen To the right side their is a wheel With different settings one is for the iPod another is for the CD player another one for the FM radio Another for A.M. Radio and some kind of Audio Input button which I don't know what that is for! In the middle of that is a select button. Under that it has two sets of botton one is for volume up and down and the other one is for changing the stations. You can find this Dock at Target.

Apple Wireless Keyboard

So I purchased this keyboard last year for my iPod Touch because I did not want to mess with typing on the touch screen. I find that I use this device on all of my iOS devices including my iPhone, iPad, my Mac Mini and of course my iPod Touch. The keyboard is relatively comfortable to use whether on a tabletop or on your lap and it is not too small to type on and not big and bulky either. I paid $69 for it but they have come out with a newer one so I would suggest looking in to that one. This keyboard has to be turned on and off each time you want to use it and I find that this can be quite a nuisance as I have no light perception whatsoever and cannot see if the device is in fact turned on or off or if the battery is low or not.

Focus 40 Blue braille display

I've only tested the Focus 40 Blue braille display from Freedom Scientific on an iPhone 4. Almost all on-screen gestures have key combinations to execute the same commands on the braille display. Though the display's keys are rather noisy, the display is very responsive. I find that I have to retype braille more often than I have had to with other displays. However, the display is light and compact. The display is comfortable to use, and the braille is crisp. I would advise purchasing an Executive Products case for the Focus 40 Blue, though, as the standard case that ships with the unit does not allow one to operate the display when one is using the shoulder strap.

Seidio CONVERT Combo Case and Holster for the iPhone 4 (formerly known as Rugged)

5 Stars

I thought that I would help to kick things off in this new area of the site by giving a quick review of the Seidio Rugged case for the iPhone 4

When the iPhone 4 was first released there weren't too many cases available, and fewer still that matched my 'must have' feature of having some form of belt clip. Things were further complicated because there are times when I want to just slip the phone into a pocket. It looked like I would end up with 2 cases, one slim enough to fit in a pocket, and a holster or case with a belt clip for the times when that was what I wanted.
