Description of App

By TuneIn

TuneIn is a new way to listen to the world through live local and global radio from wherever you are. Whether you want music, sports, news or current events, TuneIn offers over 50,000 stations and 120,000 shows for you to choose from. The TuneIn Radio Pro app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch puts this entire experience in the palm of your hand with the added benefit of recording what you’re listening to.

With TuneIn, it’s easy to find your favorite hometown station, music from Berlin that reminds you of when you lived there, or reggae from Kingston to get you in the mood for your beach vacation. TuneIn makes you feel like you are right there with the people and places that are important to you. From finding what’s local to discovering new stations from around the world, TuneIn brings you to where you want to be.

With TuneIn Radio Pro, you can:

• Record, pause and rewind any station as you are listening
• Set timed recordings for your favorite morning talk show so you can listen on your way to work
• Pause live streams for up to 30 minutes with the ability to rewind and listen again as much as you like
• Add the stations, songs and shows you love most to your presets
• Shake your phone to hear new stations based on what you already like
• Share a station, show or song with your friends on Facebook or Twitter
• Wake up every day using the alarm clock and fall asleep every night using the sleep timer
• Play your stations in the background while you use other apps
• Stream your stations to an AirPlay-compatible receiver (requires iOS 4.2)

What's New in Version 2.3

• We’ve added current and archived popular shows and stations like WBEN News Radio’s events and speeches from the likes of Barack Obama, Syracuse Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim, Patriots QB Tom Brady and coach Bill Bellichek, The Whiner Line from "The Big Show" on Boston’s WEEI Sports Radio; and interviews from KISS 98.5 in Buffalo, NY (Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, DMC of Run DMC, Justin Bua and Kermit The Frog all visited last month).
• We've made it quicker to access News - it's now available on the first Browse screen along with Music, Sports and Talk.
• We made improvements to artist search and “Now Playing” song information.
• We fixed an issue with the remote control not working on iOS 5 when using a dock.
• Additional bug fixes.
• NOTE: On iOS 5, the screen must be left unlocked for the alarm/record timer to work (this is an iOS5 issue). Consider using the in-app clock display to set the screen brightness.

Accessibility Comments

This app works great. not all stations or locations are immediately visible though. To see the rest of your choices, you will have to flick up or down with three fingers. I mention this so that no one loses out on a great app.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labelling

All buttons are clearly labelled.

Usability

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.

#3 Some new issues

Submitted by Unregistered User on 9 October 2011.

The latest update (version 2.1) has added some issues to the interface that make the user experience less pleasurable for us VoiceOver users.

Now, when viewing a list of channels (either your presets or the directory) there are page elements beside each item in the list that are recognized by VoiceOver as unlabelled buttons. Double-tapping on any of these appears to do the same as tapping on the station name itself.

Also, when browsing these lists, some station names are read by VoiceOver as: "this station only offers one stream StationName".

The app itself remains fully usable with VoiceOver, but I do find the issues mentioned above annoying enough to make me think about switching to another app.

Agree with above comment. Made it a bit more annoying. Not all Label are clearly Label anymore. Still usable but not as friendly as it was. Very disappointing.

#5 I switched to OOTunes awhile

Submitted by Scott on 9 October 2011.
Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team

I switched to OOTunes awhile ago, simply because Tunein Radio now doesn't have the ability to broadcast many of the stations I want to listen to. Stations owned by clear Channel and CBS all seemed to be blocked. Not a big deal in terms of music, but it can be if one wants to listen to sporting events on these stations.

#6 Streams

Submitted by Zuhair Mahmoud on 9 October 2011.

Each of the unlabeled buttons next to the station name represent a stream, though it would have been nice if they were labeled and only appeared upon request, as intended for a sighted user. I have no doubt the developers will oblige if told -- they seem pretty responsive.

#7 Version 2.2

Submitted by David on 3 November 2011.

The unlabelled buttons that indicated alternative streams have been removed in the latest update.

Among the other changes is the addition of a mute button on the playback screen. This button, labelled as 'Speaker', doesn't simply mute output from the stream, bur will zero the sound volume on your iDevice. Obviously this means that VoiceOver will also be silenced. The easiest way to get sound back is by using the volume up button on the side of your iDevice.

#8 Currently Gone

Wanted to pass this along to you all. This morning there is an article from AppAdvice with the following statement.

TuneIn Radio Pro Disappears From The App Store

Popular Internet radio app, TuneIn Radio Pro, has disappeared from the App Store.

We think Apple might have pulled the the app due to its recording functionality which allowed users to easily pirate songs or any other copyrighted material
that plays on the radio. This is also a feature not available in the free version of the app, which, has not been removed from the App Store.

TuneIn Radio Pro had an average four star rating with over 199 reviews and boasted an impressive 50,000 radio stations for streaming. It even received our
highest recommendation in the
AM/FM Radio Apps
and
Best Radio Apps,
AppGuides.

We are still investigating the matter and will keep you posted when we hear more.

#9 Has returned!

It has returned to iTunes. No words in why it went down nor any words why it has returned?! Regardless, it is now back. This is still my #1 choice in this kind of app.
