VO announcements while on the phone

Hello All,

I want to know if there is a way to turn off voice over announcements while I am on a phone call. For instance, when I am on a phone call, if I recieve a tweet, voice over will read the tweet while I am having a phone comversation whether the phone is up by my ear or my conversation is taking place via speaker phone. Is there a way to stop this from happening? I end up having to tell the person I am speaking to, to stop their conversation until after voice over is done reading the tweet, or NOAA update, or whatever goes off during that phone call. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. -Andrew-

#2 RE: no vo on a call.

One more thing to try is the silence speech command which is a 3 finger double tap. Do that right when your call starts then do it again when you're done or whenever you need it to restore speech

#3 no simple solution

its annoying problem which I experience frequently. because, mostly I am forgetting tripple 3 fingers tapp etc. after receiving messages while on the phone call, doing the tap is unmeanningful. I think we should inform apple about this.

#4 Sometimes the speech is very

Submitted by Eileen on 10 August, 2012 - 07:51.

Sometimes the speech is important such as when I am on a meeting and need to find the mute button or if I want to take a note or look up a contact while talking on the phone. When I know I am going to need the speech, I use headphones which allows me to talk and listen simultaneously. If I am on a casual call, VO very quickly reminds me to use the three finger double tap to mute speech.
Please don't start a compaign to turn VO off on calls. Some of us really need the multi tasking that Apple allows us to enjoy!!!

What people could request Apple to do is make a VoiceOver setting that allows one to turn on/off the speaking of push notifications while on a call.

#6 Michael is right

Thank you all for the suggestions. Looks like, for now, the three finger double tap is the way to go for me. Eileen, I am not after turning VO off completely when on phone calls; rather, I would just like the ability to choose. This way you could have what you wish and so could I. A setting option is the way to go and michael has the right idea. This way, everyone has a choice. -Andrew-

#7 Is there an option to turn

Submitted by Eileen on 13 August, 2012 - 07:56.

Is there an option to turn off volume ducking relative to VO?
I thought I read about an option to turn off volume ducking when VO starts reading. I find it very annoying to have VO blast every other sound out of the water when it speaks.  The ducking does make it very difficult to carry on a conversation and type at the same time.
The volume option in the rotar may help?
I'm not entirely sure how the volume  option in the rotar works. It seems to adjust the VO volume relative to the other sounds on the phone. Besides switching to the British male voice, which is quieter than the female American voice, I had to adjust  the rotar volume  to be able  to track my call and VO more or less at the same time.
My primary ongoing need is to taoe notes while on a call so figuring out how to optimize the VO with a phone call would really help me.

#8 using vo while in a phone call.

Submitted by Maria on 14 August, 2012 - 05:06.

HI. I find the best way to do this is by using the headphones. This way i can hear voice over and what the caller is saying. If i put my hand over the screen to do something it doesn't affect the hands free. I hope this helps.

#9 Anyone else having the same

Submitted by Eileen on 20 August, 2012 - 21:20.

Anyone else having the same problem?
,I've been playing with VO on calls and here are some things I've noticed.
1. Apple enhances the volume on a phone call. unfortunately,  VO volume is also enhanced making VO  way too loud during the call.  When I use the rotar to lower VO volume, then hang up, VO volume is so low that I can barely hear it.
2.  Locking the phone while on a call stops VO from speaking. Unfortunately, as soon  as a text comes in, Apple unlocks the screen causing VO to chatter loudly.
If the Vo voluce  did not increase while on a call  it would be much easier to put up with the chatter.
