Connecting an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch to a Wireless (Wi-Fi) Network

Follow these steps to connect your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch to a wireless network.

  1. Press the Home button to make sure you are on the Home screen.
  2. Double tap Settings.
  3. Double tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Flick right until you find the name of your wireless network. This is also known as the Secure Set Identifier (SSID). If your wireless network is unsecured, you'll be connected immediately. Although this might seem convenient, it is not recommended. Wireless networks around your neighborhood or in public places such as coffee shops may be unsecured.
  5. Double tap on the name of your wireless network to initiate the process of entering your password.
  6. Using the on-screen keyboard or a Bluetooth keyboard, type the password for your wireless network as configured in your router or given to you by your network administrator. Don't forget to double tap the button immediately to the left of the space bar on the on-screen keyboard to toggle between letters, numbers and symbols as needed. A Bluetooth keyboard works even better for data-entry tasks.
  7. Flick down with four fingers to the bottom of the screen and double tap Join to connect to the wireless network.
  8. Press Home to leave Settings and return to the Home screen.

Notes:

  • These instructions were tested on an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1.
  • Refer to the Wi-Fi section of the iPhone User Guide for additional details.
  • Refinements to these steps were made thanks to valuable user feedback.

#1 another note

It's also worth saying that when ever you connect to a network, iOS will remember that network. the next time you enable wi-fi and if it sees a remembered network it will automatically connect. if the network is secure it also remembers the password, all you have to do is tap the wi-fi switch to turn it on and it wil work.
