Just a quick word of apologies for the unexpected downtime over the past couple of days.
Many of you will have followed the saga on Twitter, but for those of you that didn't, I had to move the site to a new server at very short notice.
I won't bore you with all the techie details, but the basics are that the company who hosted this site suspended the account because AppleVis was causing heavy server load. It turned out that this was due to activity by a bot (the automated scripts that are used most commonly by search engines, but also for other purposes).
Clearly this was not a fault of the site or anything that we are doing here, and it would only have taken a couple of lines of code to block the bot. However, the hosting company were not willing to let me do this. They would only unsuspend the account if I paid to upgrade to a dedicated server. This was not an option, and in any case I took exception to them essentially holding the site to ransom.
So, the only choice was to move the site to a new hosting company. This was made more complicated than it should have been, because I had no access to the existing server. However, the switch has now been completed, and things should be back to normal. Having said that, the routing to the new server can take upto 72 hours to propagate across the Internet, so some of you will be taken to the old server (with its account suspended notice) for the time being.
