OSX Voiceover: How does it handle table captions?

Hi. I've been a reader of many AppleVis posts but now I finally got myself a username.

So here's the thing I'm noticing. If a table has a caption, I haven't found a way to get Voiceover to read it. JAWS and NVDA read it as soon as you go into the table. But I can't seem to get Voiceover to read it. Is there a setting or a keystroke I'm just not aware of? Failing that, what should someone do to make that information available to Voiceover?
