Changes to the Email Subscriptions facility on AppleVis

Those of you who use the Subscription facility on this site to receive email alerts of new content and replies will have noticed that we've been making some changes over the past week.

Moving forward, these changes will allow us to make this facility more robust. offer more potential features and make it easier to manage your subscriptions.

You will already have seen that the emails now being sent out give more pertinent information but are also more concise and easier to understand.

One new feature that we've already been able to add is the ability to follow other users. By going to their profile page and clicking on the follow button, you will receive an email alert each time that user posts to the site.

However, for the time being, it is no longer possible to subscribe to specific content types - for example, to get an email alert for every new forum post, podcast. etc. This is something that we plan to re-introduce in the future.

All email notifications are now sent immediately. There is no digest option at this time.

You can view and manage your existing subscriptions by going to the Subscriptions tab on your profile page. You will find that this is now clearer and easier to use than previously.

We tried to ensure that all existing subscriptions were migrated to the new system, but unfortunately this was not possible in all cases. So, do please check your subscriptions and add any that were not migrated. To subscribe to a specific post, simply click on the ‘Subscribe’ link that is displayed on the post page.

If you go to the Subscriptions tab on your account page, you will now find two new sub-tabs - one lists the categories that you currently follow, the second lists all available categories to follow (and includes the links to do just that).

Unlike the previous iteration of our Subscription system - where it was all or nothing in regard to subscribing to content types - you now have far more granular control. So, if jailbreaking doesn’t interest you, or you don’t have a Mac, you can now simply subscribe to the categories in the forum that you are interested in. The same goes for all other areas of the site.

Please note that this facility is still somewhat of a work in progress, so there may be further tweaks as we continue to fine-tune its features and functionality.

How come when I replied on a post \ I'm also getting an E-mail notification for my own reply? is this designed to work this way? If so, I wish you guys could change that.

Hello everyone,
I like receiving email updates on posts that I comment on. Will this new change effect that? If so, what do I need to do so that I continue to receive email notifications for posts that I comment on? Thank you.

Hello Lisa, in these cases you will need to manually subscribe to the original post. This can be done by simply using the ‘Subscribe’ link that you will find directly below the original post (it’s located just after the Heading titled ‘User Options’).

We have now added the ability to automatically subscribe to all posts that you comment on.

By default this is set to ‘No’, so you will need to go to the Edit tab of your profile page and toggle this to ‘Yes’ if you want to enable this option.
