Mind mapping for the blind

By The Oliver Kennett, 2 October, 2015

iOS and iPadOS

Is anyone aware of any mindmapping tools which are available to us as blind users? I'd imagine that it would take advantage of an IOS screen. Would be useful to me in my writing but it's also an interesting question of how one can visualise a thought with out being able to see it.

,I would love to see

,I would love to see something like this! I would also like to be able to draw maps of places too, like a house and the furniture that is in it. I know these concepts are unrelated, and yet not quite.

On the contrary, they are very relatable

It may take us longer but spacial representations of ideas or things themselves is a great way of us assimilating information. In some cases it is even more important, imagine being able to explore a building such as big ben in a smaller version so we have an understanding of its composition? We need a way of representing something large in feel size portions, and this extends to ideas too.

Anything new here?

Hi, just following up this thread. Any mind mapping tools that anyone has found to be accessible? I'm thinking edit boxes we can drag about, link up and then have layers, IE we can go into a node and create a subset. I'm thinking about this in terms of planning a book. A 2D representation on an iPad could help solidify concepts.

I love your idea very much,

Hi Bigcat - and others,
I am new on applevis, so, this is my first post here. I am blind and i am enterprise architect. I building and composing some simple or complex models. For this purpose i find Mindnode as IOS and MacOS app. Its fully accessible with many keyboard shortcuts. Its ideal solution for making mind maps, but its usefull for all kind of visual representation of hierarchic information, for example architecture models. I am using it in my work and its good app.

Smart Draw in desktop Windows version of Microsoft Office

you can also try Microsoft office, unfortunately I don’t believe this smart draw feature is available in iOS or Mac but only on Windows version of Microsoft office. Simply in word or XL, go to insert table or chart and select smart draw, using any screen reader it will tell you the type of mind map or context diagram that you can choose from, including the number of parent and child relationships in the diagram. You can then edit the diagram and text format using tab to add a child and the picture automatically adjusts and grows on the screen or decreases as you remove parents or children..

there are definitely more options out there but that’s the best one I know of that I tried and works very well with native Microsoft Windows narrator or jaws

Best of luck and if you find one that works well for you please share with the rest of us :-)
