Walking and Transit Directions Now Available in Apple Maps

Hello All, This seems to be a new feature of Apple Maps. In fact the tech guy at Apple Accessibility was surprised to find it too. Maybe it's new with the 7.1 upgrade. Anyway, I believe it's a few flicks to the right from the "Directions" button in Apple Maps, I also find I can get walking directions when I ask Siri something like "I need walking directions from here to thus and such an address or name of restaurant in the town I live in. I don't know if this is available worldwide. I live in the Northeastern U.S. I think I also noticed is some reference to it now in Blind Square's latest version. I'm fumbling around with this a lot cuz I'm not very good a navigation apps yet. But I thought I'd mention it here. Maybe some person who is good with Apple Maps and navigation will do a podcast on this. I will be the first to listen to it two or three times. It seems very useful, but is tough to get used to. Cordially, Talkie

#1 walking direction

walking direction has been available since the first release of ios 7. i guess people got turned off by the initial bad publicity (some well deserved and some didn't) and never tried apple maps again. personally, i think apple maps has been great right from the start. you can actually "touch" the map, that's the most important thing for me. i don't know about transit directions, but it's not surprising, consider apple did acquire hopspot a while ago. ok, i have my phone here, and i just tried tapping on public transportation. it still directs me to third party apps, so looks like it's not ready for prime time yet. i'm in a major Metropolitan area by the way.

#2 public tranzit directions

I just double taped on public transit directions and it didn't ask me to download any third party apps.

#3 apple maps accessibility.

hi all on this thread. well unfortunally, or fortunally for many people who think who works really it's only some tropical dream, actually apple give directions only when launch Siri since iOS 6 but on iOS7 or 7.1 the only change is the can use the own apple TTS voices for Third party apps but walking mode no really, this is not a new feature remember works only when use Siri newer devices but try to do it on some iPhone 4? the interface into apple maps is the same one. but regarding to third party apps BlindSquare include those features first started couple years ago using google maps, navegon, motion EX ETCETERA, this is a BlindSquare feature that's come on the new version, even I hope really hope one day apple works to be maps accessible, using BlindSquare and some navigation apps works better google maps.

#4 I personally would use google

I personally would use google maps. it seems to work well. I don't need a voice as where I live counting blocks is very very easy.

take care to all.

#5 Just Getting My Feet Wet with Maps

Hi everyone. I have briefly looked over the Maps application on my Mac, and to be honest it doesn't seem bad at all. I'm talking both in terms of accessibility and in terms of functionality. I especially like the fact that it seems to be location-based. Not to dwell on this too much, but I haven't had much if any formal orientation&mobility instruction for several years and I'm quite honestly starting to feel a bit self-conscious about that. I mean, I know it's not my fault, but people have been on me about getting out a lot more and breaking out of my comfort zone. I guess the confusing thing about the Maps app at this point is that there seems to be something about the Pacific Islands, which isn't even halfway near where I live. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that absolutely, I'd welcome with open arms a podcast or some sort of tutorial for newbies.

#6 When using BlindSquare “Plan

When using BlindSquare “Plan a Route”, if I choose Apple maps for turn by turn directions I get No spoken directions.
Spoken walking directions work fine if I choose Google maps, or if I use Apple Maps without BlindSquare, so it can’t be my iPhone.
My problem is only when starting Apple Maps from BlindSquare.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Can you tell me how to get product support for BlindSquare?
Thanks for any help, Barry.
