a few questions about using a brail display, vario ultra 20, with ios

Hi

So decided to dig out a vario ultra 20 I’ve had for about ten years or so. I’VE got it set up my ipad and iphone and it seems to be mostly working well, however I do have a couple of questions for those of you who are far more knowable than myself.

When my device that I am connected to locks I can’t seem to unlock it withthe vario. I assumed this would be possible like it is with a bluetooth keyboard, simply punching in my pin, but it seems to actually disconnect. Any ideas? This could of course be because it is old, but everything else seems to be working pretty okay with it.

I’m finding that it is a good input device as much as a brail display. Is there any way to shut off the display to save some power whilst keeping the brail keyboard on? I imagine the solinoids are sucking up quite a bit of juice.

I’m also experiencing some weird content jumps when in edit fields on the brail display, jumping back to the start.

I’m sure most issues are simply down to my ineptitude but if there is any help you could provide I would be very grateful.

Braille Displays

Most Braille displays cannot wake up the iOS device, unfortunately. The only ones who can implement a keyboard protocol, like the Mantis Q40.
I do not know your specific model of display however I've never seen one where you can power down the Braille cells. Anyways, they use very little power.
And the editing jumping around on iOS is an iOS bug of many years. Sometimes it just seems to work better than other times.

Punching in your code

Hi,

I would suggest powering on the display first and then unlocking your device. You can then use the display to enter your password. This was the advice given to me when I was using older models. Note that you might need to wait a few seconds for braille input.
