Requesting Beta Testers for Specular
I'm Giacomo and I'm part of the team that is developing Specular, an app that aims to help visually impaired people. The user can take a picture of something he or she needs help with and record an audio question. This is sent to a community of sighted people that will look at the picture and reply.
We just started our beta testing as a forum discussion and we will release on it the beta version of the app in about 2 weeks. Thanks so much for giving us the chance to jump in and beta test for this great project. It is always great to see developers coming to us and want to make our lives easier. I am always welcome to this approach.
Now after reading this post. Several bells went off in my mind. So please understand that I am not trying to damper on the idea behind this project. That is not my intent.
They are mostly questions that would maybe explain to me on a few things that have popped up in my mind.
There is an app now called VIZ-WIZ. At one time. It was a great app and did exactly in what you are suggesting here. Sadly, it has seem over the time. They have let it go to the side. It no longer works and is no longer on my device.
Then came along TapTapSee. Which offer somewhat similar to the VIZ-WIZ. The only downfall of the TapTapSee is the ability to request and audio recording of what we what to be told to us on a image we take. We are able to take images but it takes time and sometimes several re-try to get the answer we want. It was FREE at once but then they went in to a paid subscription plan. I got frustrated after taking a single image four times to not get the answer that I wanted. I felt I just wasted my money on it. To some people. They love it. So if that worked for them. That is great. For me it wasn't the same experience.
So questions like. What will make this different from the apps that I've mentioned. What are the plans that we can see that this will stay around for a long term. And other things that I'm sure others are probabaly thinking about.
Any explanation would be great!

I do not no for sure why Viz wiz went down hill like it did, but I wonder if it had something to do with the fact that it was totally free. I myself do not like tap tap see, but I do like the fact that it is a paid service and I believe this could mean that it will be around longer then viz wiz. I think that this Specular app would do better if it too offered a way to pay for the service. I would love to have a long term solution that could do what viz wiz did in the early days.
Thanks so much for joining in the conversation! We are fully aware of VIZ WIZ as well as TapTapSee (and a few other competitors in the market) and have a bunch of ways that make Specular different.
Since VIZ WIZ was free we believe that their business model was unsustainable. With all the costs that come with maintaining the app and our community, we've chosen to use a subscription model. To date, we would like you to be able to download the app for free and then pay a monthly subscription for Specular.
Hello there. I have been trying to reply to posts in the forum for a while now. I did email for support but never got a response. i tried to access it using safari on a macbook air running Yosemite. I could not get to the reply fields. I just tried it on my virtual windows on the mac and was able to get to the reply fields but they were not labeled and I did not know what to put where. It did not let me post. It gave me the error sound but did not tell me why. Also I ran voiceover on the mac and jaws on the vm. Thanks for any help.

Thank you for getting back to me Giacomo. I also basically wanted to let you all know why i wasn't able to post. I didn't want you all to think I had just decided not to help. I am still looking forward to helping in what ways I can to make the app excellent.
I had volunteered over a year ago and decided that maybe things had changed and the app wasn't going to beta test after all. Today, I received an email inviting me to begin beta testing. Great News and I'll probably start as soon as I can which could be even before the Superbowl game today, we'll see!

The app is still under beta testing, but we are now adding more and more people. This is great news because it means that you will have to wait only a few days before having the account activated!
Please make sure you check your spam folder for our invitation email: sometimes it happened that it ended up in there unfortunately.
Remember, also, that we are looking for both visually impaired and sighted people. So please do invite your friends and family to sign up. The link is the same.
