Traveling with Southwest Airlines is now even more convenient with our first iPhone app. Make reservations, check in for flights, and access your Rapid Rewards account directly from your iPhone. Plus, our iPhone app has DING! functionality built in, giving you instant access to exclusive, limited-time-only air fare deals. When a DING! fare is made available, you’ll be notified immediately on your iPhone.

So now there’s no need to boot up your laptop or make a phone call to prepare for your next trip. Just pull out your iPhone to:

Accessibility Comments

The main screen buttons are unlabeled in VoiceOver, so you must memorize where each option is. Once you do this, you can partially use some features of the app such as checking your Rapid Rewards account balance or next reservation. When booking new flights, the date picker may not work properly. More blind users need to contact Southwest Airlines so that they will make accessibility changes.

I have been using version 2.1.0 to check in and review flight statuses with no problems. I hadn't thought the date pickers to be accessible at all but just now took a look in version 2.1.0 and that part seems to work now. What you have to do is double tap each date (from and two separately) and then explore by touch the calendar pattern on lower part of the screen. Double tap the desired date and then find and double tap the done button to lock that date in. Note that you need to change the month by double tapping the unlabeled button before or after the month name to move back or forth respectively to the desired month. Problem now is when you choose the flights that come up in the search, I cannot pick which price point; it seems to default to the cheapest (wanna get away). I see no accessible way to choose one of the other points like business select. There are still several unlabeled buttons but in general, I think this app has improved quite a bit with Version 2 and later. I have tested this on the iPad Mini and the iPhone 5C.

Version 2.4.0 is now available. From my limited testing, it appears as though no substantive accessibility improvements have yet been made:

Hi Michael and others, I have squeaked enough to get a voice mail saying they were working on their mobile site. A question to their facebook page a few weeks later didn't prove helpful. I'm not on twitter much or i'd aproach that way.
