Finally, amazon on Apple TV uses VoiceOver voice rather than self voicing...

tvOS and Apple TV Apps

Hi everyone,

Just watched the boys... Such a great series, but noticed that, when using my Apple TV to watch, instead of the amazon app self voicing with a slow and dreary voice, it is now using Alex, the one I have set for systemwide VoiceOver.

I think it is still using its own API for how things are voiced, but much better to have the continuity of speed and actual voice when diving into the amazon app.

I'm assuming this is the same for others?

Good catch Oliver.

You had me dash off to find my Apple TV remote. VoiceOver told me that the Amazon Prime app had recently been updated, and gone indeed was the apps' own voice.

Hopefully this will also mean that you no longer have the voice still speaking the show description long after you have started watching it!

Can't wait to confirm this!

I really hope this ends up working for me. I have the Amazon video app, but avoid using it because I can't stand the slow, distorted samantha voice. If that is a thing of the past, then I will probably start using the Amazon video app a lot more often. Thanks for passing along this super exciting news!

My exact thoughts. I only watched a few things on there because the interaction was so pants.

It's still not great, lots of 'navigation not possible, when hitting the end of a list and it says menu item before every menu item, which seems unnecessary to me but certainly a lot quicker to flick about and find stuff to watch. I have no idea why they decided to go it alone rather than just using the build in apple API.

Great news!

I'm trilled to hear this, as the self-voicing was a right pain in the posterior. As mentioned above, it would often speak long after it should have stopped. Hurrah Amazon!

I noticed this too. I appreciate how Amazon tries to design for accessibility although sometimes they can be a little heavy handed. One example is the hints they give when you’re on a button. It tells you what actions you can take in all the directions your cursor can go. I appreciate it and I’m exhausted by it at the same time because there just isn’t a chance to rest your ears between actions, if that makes any sense. if they used Apple’s built-in 2-finger double-tap to silence then that might better. Anyway, they’re not perfect but I can tell they’re making an effort compared to other services.

Personally I'd prefer they'd just use apple's accessibility API. Continuity across apps is always preferable. To be honest, I'm not sure why they set off to do it alone unless it uses a completely different API in the first place. Maybe it is some sort of port over from the fire stick.
