Jailbreaking 104: Installing Jailbreak Apps Using Cyder 2

You're probably asking why I labeled this guide Jailbreaking 104 rather than Jailbreaking 102. The simple answer is that this guide is meant to be used after you've successfully jailbroken your phone. JB102 and JB103 have yet to be written. These guides will be the following.
Jailbreaking 102: How To Jailbreak Your IPhone
Jailbreaking 103: Cooking Custom Firmware With PwnageTool

Cyder 2 comes with no official readme. Therefore, I have written this guide to explain to anyone who wishes to use Cyder 2 how it actually works. Some concepts of Cyder 2 are not readily apparent to everyone.

In the zip file below, you will find all the Cydia sources I currently have on my iPhone along with lists of packages on each repository. You must have these lists in order for you to search for packages on any sources you add to Cyder 2. If a package is not in one of the package lists, you will not be able to search for or download it. You can download my preconfigured Cyder 2 here.

I will now answer a few common questions about Cyder 2.

What is Cyder 2?
You probably already know the answer to this question if you've downloaded the app, but I'll recap so we're both on the same page. Cyder 2 is an app that allows both sighted and blind users alike to download packages from Cydia repositories by using a PC or a computer with Windows installed. It then allows you to copy these apps into an autoinstall folder on your iDevice. You will see any apps you've installed upon your next respring or reboot.

What does a respring do?
A respring will restart your iDevice's springboard, thus allowing any new apps you've installed to appear on your home screen. Think of it as a refresh of your home screen. A respring is quick and painless.

How do I respring my iDevice?
There's an app you can download from the bigboss repository called Respring. Once installed, you will see a Respring icon on your home screen. Click on it to respring your iPhone.

How do I import my Cydia sources list from my iDevice to Cyder 2?
First, plug your iPhone in and make sure your computer can access it. One way to do this is to open iTunes and see if your iDevice appears in the sources tree. Once your iDevice has been successfully detected by your computer, open Cyder 2 and hit get sources from Cydia. Cyder 2 will ask you if you're sure you want to do this. Say yes. If you are using a screen reader, speech may pause for a few seconds while your list of repositories is being copied from your iDevice to Cyder 2.

I have Icy installed on my iDevice. Will sources I've added to Icy be copied into Cyder 2?
Yes.

How do I search for packages to download using Cyder 2?
Navigate to the packages tab. In the search box, type in the name of the package you wish to search for and hit enter. Your computer may ding at you, but you can be 99% sure that a search for packages is in progress.

I'm using a screen reader. How do I see the list of search results in the package search area?
Some screen readers will see the list view using normal navigation commands. Others will require alternate navigation commands, such as the use of the jaws cursor.

Once I've found a package, how do I download it?
Right-click on a package name or hit the context key if your cursor is on it. Your options here are download this package only or download with dependencies. Select the appropriate option and hit enter. Next, navigate to the downloads tab. The packages you have selected to download will be here, along with any dependencies if you've selected the download with dependencies option. Navigate through the list of packages and hit the context key or right-click the packages you wish to download. Alternatively, you may select all packages with control-a or multiple packages using shift up or downarrow. The options in the context menu you will see are download selected and add dependencies. If you've changed your mind and wish to add dependencies, the dependencies will show up at the bottom of the package list. Otherwise, hit download selected.

How do I see if my package has successfully downloaded?
If your screen reader does not support progress bars, progress bars are turned off, or you're just plain old not sure if a package has successfully downloaded, check the Archives folder in Cyder 2's installation directory to see if it's there.

I've downloaded a package. Now how do I get it onto my iDevice?
From the downloads tab, right-click or hit the context key on the app you wish to copy. Hit enter on copy to and enter again on Cydia/AutoInstall. Then, navigate to the file manager tab. There are three tabs within this tab. Navigate to the one that says Cydia/AutoInstall. From here, navigate to Cyder Cache. Select the package again, hit the context key or right-click, and hit enter on copy selected. If copied successfully, your package will appear in the mobile device list view.

Is there another way to copy packages to my iDevice once I've downloaded them with Cyder 2?
Yes. Download iPhone Folders and copy your package files from Cyder 2's Archives folder into /var/root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall.

Where does Cyder 2 store my Cydia sources?
Cyder 2 has a folder called sources.list.d. Each source is stored in its own file.

Where are package lists stored?
Cyder 2 has a folder called Lists. Packages are often stored among several package list files. File extensions for these list files will vary.

Help! The package I've installed is not showing up on my home screen. I have resprung my iDevice before checking to see if my app appeared.
The package you downloaded is probably not an app. It may be a tweak, add-on, theme, ringtone, sound pack, or an app or utility which can only be invoked using the command line. You must SSH into your iPhone via an SSH client. There are clients for every platform, including iOS. Check the official app store for an iOS SSH client.

My question is not covered in this guide.
Sorry about that. Feel free to post your questions in the comments section for this guide. Otherwise, google is your friend.
Enjoy!

#4 Tethering

Posted on January 5, 2011 by Rose

You will still be capped. The only difference is that unless ATT catches you, you will be able to tether without paying more money for the feature.
Hope this helps.

#5 Apt, Icy and Openssh incl. Dependencies

Posted on January 6, 2011 by jscholes

For those who are lazy, can't get Cyder2 working, or just want to get going straight away, I've put together an archive of .deb files. Simply drop them into your Cydia AutoInstall directory, and on next reboot/Respring, Apt, OpenSSH and Icy, plus all required dependencies, will be installed on your jailbroken iDevice.

Click http://goo.gl/Iycuy to download the archive, and hopefully this helps somebody.

I will certainly point to this link in other guides I write and pass it on to others. Nice going. :)

#7 Oh, one more thing

I would add cURL to this archive as well. A touch user told me he couldn't install Apt without it. I had no such problems when using these debs (which I had already but not in a nice bundle) to install Apt, but as my friend is very much technically inclined, I will take his word for it.
