Introducing the AppleVis iOS App Hall of Fame

We are pleased to announce the launch of the AppleVis iOS App Hall of Fame, where we will be acknowledging and celebrating the apps that exemplify all that is great about owning an iDevice.

Our goal for the Hall of Fame is to showcase the passion and hard work that app developers put into creating great apps that are fully accessible to VoiceOver users. These apps place powerful tools into the palms of our hands, and give access to services, information, media and entertainment that the sighted world takes for granted.

Apps will be nominated and voted on monthly by registered users of the AppleVis site, with the two apps that gain the most votes being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

To mark the launch of the Hall of Fame, a total of 8 apps will be inducted this month.

The nominations for this first round of inductions are:

  • Ariadne GPS
  • Bookmark
  • Dropbox
  • Downcast
  • Dragon Dictation
  • Feeddler RSS Reader
  • iBlink Radio
  • iBooks
  • IM+ Pro
  • King of Dragon Pass
  • LookTel Money Reader
  • Papa Sangre
  • Read2Go
  • Sendero LookAround
  • Stem Stumper
  • TuneIn Radio Pro
  • TweetList Pro
  • VizWiz

Visit the main Hall of Fame page, where you can cast your vote and nominate any apps that you think should be considered for induction.

#1 Great Idea, but...

Submitted by Sandra on 13 December, 2011 - 17:25.

Maybe I’ve missed something here, but who has decided which apps can be voted on? For example, I am not sure why Feeddler would be more deserving than Feeds, which is equally accessible. Personally I prefer Feeddler, but I don’t see why it appears in this list when other accessible RSS readers don’t. Has there been an opportunity to nominate, which I have missed? That might explain this selection of apps, which would otherwise look a bit random to me. I think though, this hall of fame is a great idea and I’ve already voted for one of the Apps.

#2 App nominations

The apps for this inaugural vote were chosen by the AppleVis Editorial Team.

We discussed the selection over a couple of weeks, and although we tried to be fairly objective, there was always going to be a degree of subjectivity to our suggestions. Each of us probably still have apps that we think should have been included, and almost certainly a few that we think shouldn't have made the list.

In the future, the nominations will come from site users.

As for Feeddler, my personal opinion is that it offers a good set of features (particularly the ability to fine-tune which feed items are displayed and how) and provides a more complete and satisfying user experience with VoiceOver than any other RSS reader that I have tried. And yes, I guess there's an example of subjectivity <smile>

#3 Less than 48 hours to cast your vote

A quick reminder that the vote for the inaugural  group of inductees closes in less than 2 days.

So, if you've still not voted, be quick!

Head over to the Main Hall of Fame page to cast your vote for the app that you think most deserves induction.

Whilst there, you might also want to nominate an app for a future vote.
