There have been apps that mimicked pub quizzes before. But never yet has there been an app that mimics the pub-quiz machine. You know the one – the one that sits there in the dark corner of the pub, all broody like. You and your pals wander over after a few jars and, suddenly, all hell breaks loose as you realise that, even though you've had a few, you really, really want to outdo each other – because these games are seriously competitive. Not to mention addictive.

Now, iPubquiz has put that same level of addiction and competitiveness into an app that you can download right here on iTunes. It's all here. All the fun and excitement of those pub-quiz machines. All the simplicity of an app. And all the usability you'd expect from a top app. Best of all, you can play it anywhere, anytime without feeding the machine with coins. And you can play it sober. Nifty.

One of the main strengths of iPubquiz is simplicity. Once you've tapped play, you're off. You're straight into a choice of four random categories, chosen from TV, Sport, Science, Royalty, Pot Luck, Politics, Phrases, People, Nature, Mythology, Music, Medicine, Literature, History, Geography, Food & Drink, Film, Arts or Animals.

But, you know, one of the annoying aspects of these quiz games is that, if you play them enough, the same questions pop up time and again. Not so with iPubquiz. With thousands of different questions, you'll be cussing and swearing less and playing much, much more.

So, how does it work? Well, you'll be asked a series of questions for your chosen category and you win points for correct answers, as well as speed of response. Each round is five multiple choice questions. Get them right and you rack up points. The more you score, the higher you go up the Global on-line scoreboard.

After each round of questions, there's a bonus question that asks you to put four items in the right order. Get this right and you'll collect ‘bonuses’ or ‘beer mats’ that give you 50:50s or passes if you don’t know an answer – you have three chances. The game's only up if you make four wrong guesses. Then, guess what – you just start again.

Anyone with an ounce of competition in their bodies or who enjoys pub games will love this game. Challenge your mates, break up long journeys and get seriously addicted to iPubquiz – the king of pub-quiz apps.

Accessibility Comments:

This game is fully accessible with VoiceOver, apart from a couple of unlabled buttons.  However, there are a few things to keep in mind while playing it.
Text written to the game such as questions and  feedback isn't read automatically.  Also, the text seems to gradually fill the screen rather than it all being present at once.  So this results in VO reading increasingly larger portions of it each time you touch near the top of the display until you finally get the whole message. This is probably to mimic the look of these quiz machines.

As stated in the description, you are timed, and you earn more points the faster you buzz in with a correct answer, so we are penalised because of us having to mess around trying to get Vo to read the question.

Each question has 4 possible answers which are aranged virtically below it, however flicking through the interface seems the quickest.

If you win the bonus round, 1 or 2 unlabelled buttons will come up. The first is between choices 3 and 4 and the second after choice 4 in the flicking order.  these I believe are 50/50 and pass, respectively.
The unlabelled button right at the bottom of the scores display will take you back to the main menu.
in-game sounds and music are disabled by default, but  you can easily toggle them from the main menu.
These are all the tips I have discovered so far.

VoiceOver Performance:

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling:

Most buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability:

There are some accessibility issues with this app, but it can still be used if you are willing to tolerate these issues and learn how to work around them.

Other Comments:

If you are willing to tolerate the quirks I have mentioned, this game will get you very addicted fast. It really is the next best thing to playing the actual quiz machines it emulates. Thanks to the design of iDevices its touchscreen based, which most of them are these days, and it also talks thanks to VoiceOver.
